Grommet
Insertion
Grommets are small tubes
which can be introduced into the middle ear cavity through an
incision in the tympanic membrane. It serves two
purposes: 1. It ventilates the middle ear cavity 2. It drains
the middle ear cavity if secretions are present. In children this
procedure is commonly combined with adenotonsillectomy. It can
be performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia.
General anaesthesia is preferred in
children.
